Lupus Lake, Ontario: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  Lupus Lake is set in Nipissing District, Ontario. The water sits 449 metres up. The water covers some 28 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. Shoreline comes to about 3.9 km, small enough to learn in a day. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Huntsville at 41 km is the nearest place to stop. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.

• Where to Fish on Lupus Lake

  Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Nipissing District, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Lupus Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.

  Temperature averages peak at 18°C in July and bottom out at -12°C in January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. The lid tends to go about late April and return around late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Expect Lupus Lake to follow that timing.

  Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. You can camp 310 m off, which suits an early start. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it.
