Surprise Lake near Amethyst Harbour: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Where to Fish on Surprise Lake

  Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Surprise Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.

• Seasonal Patterns

  The seasonal spread runs -13°C to 17°C. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. At Surprise Lake the season follows that pattern closely.

  The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. You can launch from a ramp around 440 m away. Moorings are at Silver Islet Marina, roughly 480 m off. Mapping shows a jetty some 440 m off. Toilets are 650 m away, which matters on a long session. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Roadside Lake, 0.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Surprise Lake in what we hold.
