A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a busy WNW wind on the open water with the barometer flat. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Sum Lake. Block out the hours from the day. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Sum Lake in the Kenora District part of Ontario. Height above sea level is 337 metres. Surface area is around 91 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Around 11 km of bank, which is a long day on foot. Kenora lies 42 km from the water. Vermilion Bay lies 89 km off, Lac du Bonnet another 108 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Read Sum Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
On the long-term average, July reads 19°C and January reads -18°C. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Expect Sum Lake to follow that timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Portage Lake at 1.8 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Sum Lake in what we hold.
