Sunshine start to finish today, with a consistent blow out of the WNW and pressure sitting still. The fish at Square Lake are likely to sit near the weed line and any gaps in it. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Kenora District entry here is Square Lake, in Ontario. It lies 391 metres above sea level. With some 30 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 2.1 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. It is a small entry by Kenora District standards. For a base, Dryden sits 51 km out. Further out sit Vermilion Bay (52 km) and Sioux Lookout (70 km). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Fish Square Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -18°C at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Expect Square Lake to follow that timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. For a change of water, Elevator Lake is 1.8 km distant. None of that is settled for Square Lake in what we hold.
