Heavy overcast holding through the day, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure going nowhere. The fish at Speed Lake are likely to sit near windblown banks where food collects. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Speed Lake is a Rainy River District water, in Ontario. It sits at 449 metres above sea level. About 4 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. On size it sits at the modest end of our Rainy River District list. Atikokan sits 41 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Ignace (55 km) and Dryden (101 km). The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Species logged across Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. At Speed Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -17°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Speed Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Should this one be busy, Style Lake is 1.7 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Speed Lake for certain.
