Dull, settled light over the water, with a kind WSW breeze on the water and pressure going nowhere. Give inflow corners and shaded margins the first hour at Grey Trout Lake. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Grey Trout Lake is one of the Rainy River District waters in Ontario. Everything around it is mixed forest. This is sizeable water at about 6.78 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. At about 51 km of edge, most people fish a single area and learn it well. It ranks high for size among our Rainy River District listings. Some 45 km away sits Atikokan, the nearest settlement. Then Ignace, 53 km, and Dryden, 97 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
We hold no depth figure for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Public occurrence data for Rainy River District names northern pike, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The shape of Grey Trout Lake decides where the fish sit.
Climate normals give 18°C for July and -18°C for January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. At Grey Trout Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. For a change of water, Little Grey Trout Lake is 3.1 km distant. Treat access at Grey Trout Lake as something to verify.
