Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a proper ripple driven from the NW with the glass holding level. The water to cover at Sloe Lake is bays that hold the day's warmth. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Sudbury, Ontario, this is Sloe Lake. The surroundings are mixed forest. The water covers some 39 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. A shoreline of some 4.7 km keeps the choices simple. Head to Capreol, 42 km away, for anything you forgot. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 61 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Open biodiversity records for Sudbury list smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Anyone new to Sloe Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Between January at about -15°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Time your trip to Sloe Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Ayotte Lake, 2 km out. Check the position at Sloe Lake before loading the car.
