A broken sky giving spells of shade, with a firm NW blow and no real change in pressure. Activity on Shoe Lake should centre on windblown banks where food collects. The day holds up well from afternoon into evening. Work the productive water thoroughly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Shoe Lake belongs to Algoma, Ontario. The bank gives way to mixed forest. It runs to roughly 20 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 2.8 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Elliot Lake sits 23 km from the bank. Blind River lies 45 km off, Espanola another 47 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Reported across Algoma: walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Shoe Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Long-run averages give July about 18°C and January about -11°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about early December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. On Shoe Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Smail Lake, 1.7 km away. Check the position at Shoe Lake before loading the car.
