Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a persistent wind from the WNW and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Shelby Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Shelby Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District waters in Ontario. What surrounds it is boreal forest. Surface area is around 78 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The shoreline runs about 6.9 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. 63 km away sits Lappe, the nearest town. Further out sit Shuniah Township (75 km) and County Park (77 km). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Survey and observation records for Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Work Shelby Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Typical July readings run about 17°C; by January the average is down near -20°C. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. The water is typically free of ice between early May and mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Plan any trip to Shelby Lake around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Errey Lake at 2.3 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Shelby Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
