Overcast skies today, with a whisper of wind from the WNW with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Sand Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. Numbers are low everywhere; the morning is the pick of them. Go lighter and slower than usual. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Thunder Bay District, Sand Lake is an Ontario water. Elevation runs to 289 metres. It measures about 24 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The full circuit measures close to 2.6 km on foot. Terrace Bay sits 14 km from the bank. After that come Schreiber at 18 km and Nipigon at 88 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Sand Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Averages move between -16°C in January and 16°C in July. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Time your trip to Sand Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lower Lake at 2.4 km is the sensible second choice. Where Sand Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
