A mixed sky through the night, with a useful WNW wind pushing food about and the barometer holding steady. Give the weed line and any gaps in it the first hour at Rice Lake. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Rice Lake belongs to Kenora District, Ontario. The bank gives way to rolling bush. The water covers around 4.37 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. At about 12 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. On our Kenora District list it sits near the top for size. Dryden is the closest town at 7.6 km. After that come Vermilion Bay at 48 km and Sioux Lookout at 58 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Open biodiversity records for Kenora District list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Rice Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while January sits near -18°C. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Rice Lake.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Failing this one, try Zealand Lake, 3 km away. Confirm before you fish Rice Lake.
