A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with just enough WNW wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. On Reception Lake, work the calm side of the wind first. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Pick two or three spots and rotate them. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

The Algoma end of Ontario holds Reception Lake. The surface lies 262 metres up. Around 88 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The whole outline is near 4.3 km, and most of it is walkable. Some 35 km away sits Thessalon, the nearest settlement. Then Blind River, 40 km, and Elliot Lake, 48 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Fish Reception Lake to its features, not to its size.
Averages move between -11°C in January and 18°C in July. Hard water is a season in its own right here. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It sets the rhythm of the year at Reception Lake.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Big Bear Lake sits 2.5 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Reception Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
