Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with next to no ripple with a settled glass. On Rainbow Lake, work sheltered bays and points first. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

The Haliburton County end of Ontario holds Rainbow Lake. It lies 458 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 39 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 4.8 km, and most of it is walkable. It is high ground by Ontario standards. Further out sit Haliburton Village (32 km) and Bancroft (55 km). It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Reported across Haliburton County: smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, rock bass and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Rainbow Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Averages move between -12°C in January and 18°C in July. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Plan around that when you fish Rainbow Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. The nearest alternative is Upper Redstone Lake, 2.4 km out. Treat access at Rainbow Lake as something to verify.
