Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with a consistent blow out of the NW with the glass holding level. Activity on Porter Lake should centre on points where shallow meets deep. The day holds up well from morning through afternoon. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Porter Lake is one of the Greater Sudbury listings for Ontario. The setting is rolling bush on every side. Around 26 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 2.3 km on foot. Head to Espanola, 21 km away, for anything you forgot. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 56 km away. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Greater Sudbury include smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, pumpkinseed and rock bass. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Porter Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -13°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Expect Porter Lake to follow that timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Little Swan Lake, 3.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Porter Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
