An even grey lid over the water, with a faint W drift with the glass holding level. Start the search at North Silver Lake along any hard bottom among the soft. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

North Silver Lake falls in Nipissing District, part of Ontario. Land around it is mixed forest. The water covers some 21 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The bank runs about 3.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Markstay-Warren at 46 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Capreol (54 km) and West Nipissing (58 km). The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of North Silver Lake decides where the fish sit.
The warm month here averages 18°C; the cold one sits at -15°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on North Silver Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Manitou Lake, 3.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at North Silver Lake are worth checking on the day.
