Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the W and pressure going nowhere. Activity on Echo Lake should centre on shallow cover and weed edges. A stay-home graph, with the morning as the one excuse to go. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

This water sits in Nipissing District, Ontario. Everything around it is lake country bush. At about 61 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. With 8.8 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Markstay-Warren sits 46 km from the bank. Then West Nipissing, 53 km, and Sturgeon Falls, 54 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Echo Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -15°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Open water usually runs from late April until about late November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Echo Lake follows the weather closely.
We hold no note on access for this one. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. East Jones Lake at 1.7 km is the sensible second choice. Treat access at Echo Lake as something to verify.
