A still, cloudless night on the water, with flat calm through the day and steady pressure. Whatever swims in Muck Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. One clear peak today: the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Muck Lake lies in Greater Sudbury, in Ontario. This is mixed forest country. Around 17 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The bank runs about 3.0 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Nearest town is Capreol, 52 km off. Beyond it, Valley East at 60 km and Rayside-Balfour at 72 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Public occurrence data for Greater Sudbury names smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, pumpkinseed and rock bass. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Muck Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Seasonal averages run from -15°C in January up to 18°C in July. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. That is the shape of the year on Muck Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Lower High Lake is 1.6 km off. Confirm before you fish Muck Lake.
