Heavy overcast holding through the day, with steady pressure of wind from the W and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Mountain Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. The day holds up well from the day. Let the water tell you when to move. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Mountain Lake falls in Frontenac County, part of Ontario. It stands 302 metres above sea level. The water measures roughly 2 hectares, so nothing here is far from anything else. On size it sits at the modest end of our Frontenac County list. Sharbot Lake sits 38 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Renfrew at 41 km and Perth at 48 km. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Frontenac County cover pumpkinseed, bluegill, rock bass and smallmouth bass. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Treat Mountain Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Expect July to average close to 19°C, with January the cold end at about -11°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Open water usually runs from late April until about early December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. That is the shape of the year on Mountain Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Robinsons Lake is 1.4 km off. For Mountain Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
