Soft grey light all day today, with air barely moving with a settled glass. Give sheltered bays and points the first hour at Monk Lake. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Monk Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. It lies 395 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 27 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 3.4 km, and most of it is walkable. Chapleau lies 54 km from the water. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 287 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Sudbury records list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Fish Monk Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Expect Monk Lake to follow that timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Failing this one, try Peel Lake, 2.4 km away. What applies at Monk Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
