Overcast skies today, with light air out of the W and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Mick Lake around windblown banks where food collects. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Mick Lake is one of the Sudbury waters in Ontario. This is mixed forest ground. Small at around 3 hectares: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is a small entry by Sudbury standards. For a base, Chapleau sits 84 km out. Further out sit Timmins (126 km) and Elliot Lake (133 km). Alternatives close at hand: Elmes Lake at 0.7 km, Shallow Lake 1.9 km away, Crabtree Lake at 4.2 km, Baerr Lake 4.4 km away and Silva Lake at 4.4 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Survey and observation records for Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Mick Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warmest month averages 17°C, the coldest about -16°C. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about mid November in an average year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Mick Lake.
Access is not recorded for this water. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Elmes Lake, 0.7 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Mick Lake in what we hold.
