An even grey lid over the water, with a proper ripple driven from the WNW with the barometer flat. The fish at McDonald Lake are likely to sit near points where shallow meets deep. No standout window; expect steady, modest action. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

You will find McDonald Lake in Kenora District, Ontario. It lies 409 metres above sea level. With some 34 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 3.0 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. On size it sits at the modest end of our Kenora District list. Dryden lies 30 km from the water. Winnipeg sits 309 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Read McDonald Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Averages move between -18°C in January and 18°C in July. Expect a real winter and a strong spring after it. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Expect McDonald Lake to follow that timing.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Narrow Lake sits 1.9 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for McDonald Lake in what we hold.
