Full sun on the water today, with a consistent blow out of the NW with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in May Lake should be near the seam between weed and open water. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

May Lake is an Algoma water, Ontario side. The land about it is pine and birch. The water covers around 3.51 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Shoreline length is close to 24 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Size puts it in the front rank of our Algoma list. Elliot Lake lies 12 km from the water. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 115 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Algoma records list walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On May Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
The range across the year is -12°C to 18°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on May Lake follows the weather closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Halfmoon Lake, 2.4 km out. Signs at May Lake carry more weight than any list.
