A closed sky with even light today, with a persistent wind from the WSW and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Maville Lake should hold close to the weed line and any gaps in it. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Night
Set in Sudbury, Ontario, this is Maville Lake. The setting is lake country bush. At about 36 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Some 5.1 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Start from Espanola, 12 km down the road. Then Little Current, 36 km, and Dowling, 54 km. Near neighbours: Mong Lake after 3.8 km, Stony Lake (4.1 km), Young's Lake after 5 km, McLander Creek (5.4 km) and Boundary Lake after 6.4 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, Iowa darter and walleye. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Maville Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Averages move between -12°C in January and 18°C in July. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. The open-water window runs from around late April to about early December in an average year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. The season on Maville Lake rarely departs from it.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Mong Lake at 3.8 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Maville Lake in what we hold.
