Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with a gentle ripple from the SSW with the barometer flat. The fish at Martin Lake are likely to sit near shallow cover and weed edges. The night is where the day comes good. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Martin Lake is one of the Nipissing District waters in Ontario. Land around it is rolling bush. Surface area is around 28 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Roughly 4.2 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Haliburton Village follows at 50 km, then Huntsville at 61 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. The near bank of Martin Lake is often the one people ignore.
The range across the year is -12°C to 18°C. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. On average, late April opens the water and late November closes it again. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Martin Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Blueberry Lake, 2 km out. Rules at Martin Lake are worth checking on the day.
