Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with just enough SSW wind to ripple the surface with a settled glass. Start the search at Fly Lake along the margins and the shelf beyond them. Save your energy for the night. Change depth before you change anything else. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Nipissing District end of Ontario holds Fly Lake. Everything around it is pine and birch. At roughly 9 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde is the closest place, 38 km off. Beyond it, Haliburton Village at 54 km and Huntsville at 61 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Work Fly Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Plan any trip to Fly Lake around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Fin Lake sits 1.8 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position at Fly Lake before loading the car.
