Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a stiffish breeze from the WNW and pressure sitting still. Expect most activity at Maple Lake around the weed line and any gaps in it. The day runs flat but workable from start to finish. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Maple Lake is one of the Rainy River District waters in Ontario. Country round the bank runs to lake country bush. It measures about 46 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. With 5.2 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Fort Frances sits 41 km from here and is the nearest stop. Then International Falls, 43 km, and Emo, 50 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Rainy River District, recorded fish include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. The shape of Maple Lake decides where the fish sit.
The warmest month averages 19°C, the coldest about -17°C. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That shapes the year on Maple Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Kerr Lake at 2.7 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Maple Lake before loading the car.
