Glare on the water under a clear sky, with a useful WNW wind pushing food about with a settled glass. The productive water at Ash Lake will be around shallow cover and weed edges. Even, unhurried fishing on the cards. Change depth before you change anything else. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Ash Lake sits in Rainy River District, out in Ontario. It sits at 339 metres above sea level. The water covers around 1.96 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. With 15 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Fort Frances is the closest place, 37 km off. Winnipeg sits 287 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Open biodiversity records for Rainy River District list northern pike, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Ash Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Averages move between -17°C in January and 19°C in July. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. At Ash Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Locking Lake sits 3.7 km off and takes the overflow. Check the position on Ash Lake before loading the car.
