Hard light and clear air over the water, with a consistent blow out of the WNW and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Magnet Lake is reed fringes and open pockets. Middle-of-the-road numbers across the board. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Kenora District in Ontario is where Magnet Lake sits. It stands 349 metres above sea level. Roughly 12 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Shoreline comes to about 1.8 km, small enough to learn in a day. Most waters listed here for Kenora District are larger. For supplies, Kenora is 22 km out. Winnipeg sits 208 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Magnet Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Averages move between -17°C in January and 19°C in July. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. It holds true on Magnet Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Gold Lake at 0.7 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Magnet Lake in what we hold.
