Lob Lake, Ontario: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  In Ontario, Lob Lake falls inside Thunder Bay District. The bank gives way to spruce and muskeg. It runs to roughly 11 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 2.2 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Our Thunder Bay District list holds plenty of bigger water. Lappe lies 86 km from the water. Shuniah Township follows at 100 km, then County Park at 100 km. This one is safely inside the county line.

• Where to Fish on Lob Lake

  Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Public occurrence data for Thunder Bay District names cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lob Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Typical July readings run about 17°C; by January the average is down near -20°C. This far north the hard season runs and runs. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. • Tackle & Baits

  We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Failing this one, try Empey Lake, 2.4 km away. Where Lob Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
