Rain moving through today, with mild air moving in from the WNW and the barometer holding steady. On Levert Lake, work shallow cover and weed edges first. A grinding day likely, with the night worth the effort if any is. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Cochrane District, Ontario, this is Levert Lake. This is taiga country. With some 62 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The full circuit measures close to 3.4 km on foot. Ground here is low by Ontario standards. Kapuskasing at 38 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Smooth Rock Falls (56 km) and Cochrane (104 km). This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Cochrane District include northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. At Levert Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Climate normals give 17°C for July and -19°C for January. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Anyone fishing Levert Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Torrance Lake, 3.4 km away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Levert Lake is worth confirming on the day.
