Partly cloudy skies today, with a useful WSW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. The productive water at Lac Viau will be around the weed line and any gaps in it. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Lac Viau is set in Sudbury, Ontario. It lies 185 metres above sea level. It measures about 13 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. About 2.6 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Most waters listed here for Sudbury are larger. Markstay-Warren is the closest town at 37 km. West Nipissing lies 42 km off, Sturgeon Falls another 42 km. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Sudbury cover smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Lac Viau should walk it once before setting up.
Seasonal averages run from -12°C in January up to 19°C in July. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. The season on Lac Viau follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Monet Lake, 2.7 km away.
