Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a firm WNW blow with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac des Iles along windblown banks where food collects. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Change depth before you change anything else. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac des Iles is a Thunder Bay District water, Ontario side. It stands 465 metres above sea level. Around 18.02 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. At about 78 km of edge, most people fish a single area and learn it well. Size puts it in the front rank of our Thunder Bay District list. The town to know is Lappe, 73 km out. Then Shuniah Township, 84 km, and County Park, 87 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. The county list is broader than any single water. Fish Lac des Iles where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Seasonal averages run from -20°C in January up to 17°C in July. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about early May until roughly mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. At Lac des Iles the season follows that pattern closely.
Public data does not answer the access question here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Shorty Lake at 3 km is the sensible second choice. The position on Lac des Iles is worth confirming on the day.
