A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a working WNW breeze and the barometer holding steady. Fish at Jeff Lake should hold close to reed fringes and open pockets. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Algoma entry here is Jeff Lake, in Ontario. The water sits 404 metres up. The water measures roughly 8 hectares, so nothing here is far from anything else. It is a small entry by Algoma standards. Start from Wawa, 40 km down the road. Chapleau follows at 112 km, then Sault Ste. Marie at 130 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Algoma cover walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. At Jeff Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The year swings from about -13°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Jeff Lake rarely departs from it.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Belanger Lake, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on Jeff Lake before loading the car.
