Soft grey light all day today, with dead-still conditions and steady pressure. Expect most activity at Hull Lake around structure within a cast of the bank. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

In Ontario, Hull Lake falls inside Cochrane District. The country round it is spruce and muskeg from end to end. Surface area is around 14 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Shoreline comes to about 1.8 km, small enough to learn in a day. Kapuskasing sits 27 km from the bank. Hearst is 68 km and Smooth Rock Falls 87 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Cochrane District: northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Hull Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Expect July to average close to 17°C, with January the cold end at about -19°C. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Hull Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Failing this one, try Lac de Midas, 5.3 km away. Rules at Hull Lake are worth checking on the day.
