Overcast skies today, with a working WSW breeze and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Bergsma Lake should come off the shallows early and the drop later. Quiet conditions all day, with the morning marginally better. Quiet tactics only; the fish will not chase today. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Bergsma Lake stands in Cochrane District, Ontario. The water sits 230 metres up. Around 18 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 1.7 km on foot. It is low-lying compared with other Ontario water we list. Start from Kapuskasing, 29 km down the road. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 361 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Public occurrence data for Cochrane District names northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The near bank of Bergsma Lake is often the one people ignore.
Averages move between -19°C in January and 17°C in July. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. It holds true on Bergsma Lake more years than not.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Lac de Midas, 4 km away. Rules at Bergsma Lake are worth checking on the day.
