An even grey lid over the water, with a useful SW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. The fish at Hot Lake are likely to sit near the calm side of the wind. One clear peak today: the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Hot Lake sits in Nipissing District, out in Ontario. The land about it is pine and birch. It runs to roughly 18 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.2 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Huntsville lies 41 km from the water. Further out sit South River (44 km) and Powassan (57 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Hot Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
In an average year July sits at 18°C and January at -13°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly late November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. That shapes the year on Hot Lake.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows a campsite some 870 m from the water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Islet Lake at 0.9 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Hot Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
