Cloud coming and going through the night, with a working WNW breeze with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Horse Lake should come off sheltered bays and points. A tough forecast; the night offers the only real chance. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Horse Lake lies in Kenora District, Ontario. The water sits 378 metres up. At 1.32 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. With 10 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Sioux Lookout is the closest place, 50 km off. It is 296 km to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and johnny darter among the fish reported. The county list is broader than any single water. Read Horse Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -19°C. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. The season on Horse Lake follows the weather closely.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Folkard Lake, 1.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Horse Lake locally before you travel.
