Soft grey light all day today, with a stiffish breeze from the W and the barometer holding steady. On Hornet Lake, work the weed line and any gaps in it first. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Look for Hornet Lake in the Sudbury part of Ontario. Elevation runs to 457 metres. It runs to roughly 41 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The outline measures near 6.8 km, so local knowledge counts. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Chapleau sits 60 km from the bank. After that come Wawa at 72 km and Sault Ste. Marie at 116 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Sudbury: smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Hornet Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Averages here run 16°C at the top of summer and -15°C at the bottom of winter. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Anyone fishing Hornet Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Bonnet Lake sits 2.5 km off and takes the overflow. Confirm access to Hornet Lake locally before you travel.
