Damp, showery conditions today, with a proper ripple driven from the WNW and steady pressure. Fish at Hard-dog Lake should hold close to the shaded margin through bright spells. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

The Kenora District end of Ontario holds Hard-dog Lake. It sits at 445 metres above sea level. The water covers around 1.89 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Shoreline length is close to 17 km, and each section fishes a little differently. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Ignace lies 100 km from the water. Thunder Bay sits 177 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Hard-dog Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -20°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. That is the shape of the year on Hard-dog Lake.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Foot Lake at 3.4 km is the sensible second choice. Where Hard-dog Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
