Blue sky from bank to bank today, with a busy W wind on the open water and the barometer holding steady. Gross Lake should fish best around the shallows early and the drop later today. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Gross Lake is a Nipissing District water, Ontario side. The land about it is rolling bush. Surface area is around 15 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. There is roughly 2.4 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. The town to know is Chalk River, 48 km out. Gatineau sits 182 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Records held for Nipissing District cover smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch and pumpkinseed. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Gross Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-run averages give July about 18°C and January about -13°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. On Gross Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. For a change of water, Loonskin Lake is 2.5 km distant. What applies at Gross Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
