A grey, even sky over the water, with light air out of the W with the glass holding level. Start the search at Grey Lake along sheltered bays and points. One clear peak today: the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Look for Grey Lake in the Sudbury part of Ontario. The ground round it is lake country bush. It measures about 32 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. There is roughly 5.3 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. Lively at 34 km is the nearest place to stop. After that come Greater Sudbury at 42 km and Azilda at 47 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Sudbury, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Grey Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
In an average year July sits at 19°C and January at -11°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. The open-water window runs from around late April to about early December in an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Grey Lake.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Billy Lake at 1.1 km is the sensible second choice. Ask locally about Grey Lake if anything is unclear.
