A grey, even sky over the water, with mild air moving in from the S with the glass holding level. Start the search at Grassy Lake along the shaded margin through bright spells. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Grassy Lake is a Hastings County water, in Ontario. It sits at 358 metres above sea level. At about 14 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The edge runs 2.1 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The town to know is Bancroft, 20 km out. Further out sit Madoc (58 km) and Marmora (60 km). There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name rock bass, smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch and bluegill. The county list is broader than any single water. Work Grassy Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -12°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The water is typically free of ice between late April and early December. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. On Grassy Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. You can launch: the ramp is 1.2 km away. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Should this one be busy, V Lake is 1.5 km off. Treat access at Grassy Lake as something to verify.
