No direct sun expected today, with a stiffish breeze from the WNW and pressure going nowhere. The productive water at Spruce Lake will be around the calm side of the wind. The forecast backs the stretch from the day. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Spruce Lake in the Hastings County part of Ontario. It stands 350 metres above sea level. At roughly 5 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Our Hastings County list holds plenty of bigger water. Bancroft sits 19 km from the bank. Madoc follows at 56 km, then Marmora at 58 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Survey and observation records for Hastings County include rock bass, smallmouth bass and pumpkinseed. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Work Spruce Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
July runs about 18°C on average, January about -12°C. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. On average, late April opens the water and early December closes it again. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Expect Spruce Lake to follow that timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Grassy Lake, 2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Spruce Lake in what we hold.
