Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a faint WNW drift with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Gates Lake should come off bays that hold the day's warmth. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Gates Lake sits within Rainy River District in Ontario. Around the bank it is pine and birch. The water covers around 1.12 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. The perimeter runs near 11 km, so plan the walk before you start. Fort Frances is the closest town at 61 km. It is 299 km to Winnipeg, the nearest city. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth figures are not published for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Gates Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Between January at about -17°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Break-up sits around late April on average, with the water closing again about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. At Gates Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Manitou Stretch is 3.5 km off. Signs at Gates Lake carry more weight than any list.
