Hard light and clear air over the water, with a light NNW breeze with the barometer flat. Most of the action on Foster Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. A middling, even day, steady rather than spectacular. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Foster Lake in the Algoma part of Ontario. Height above sea level is 424 metres. It runs to roughly 41 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 4.5 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Wawa lies 75 km from the water. The nearest city of size is Thunder Bay, 271 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. The county list is broader than any single water. On Foster Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -16°C. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Anyone fishing Foster Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try North McCrea Lake, 7.5 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Foster Lake for certain.
