Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a decent WNW wind working the banks and pressure sitting still. Activity on Flat Lake should centre on the weed line and any gaps in it. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Flat Lake in Kenora District, Ontario. The bank is 372 metres above sea level. At some 2.67 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The margin runs to about 13 km in total. Start from Red Lake, 11 km down the road. Winnipeg is the closest city, 256 km away. Others close at hand: Russett Lake a touch under 2.6 km, High Lake at 2.7 km, Faulkenham Lake a touch under 4.3 km, Halden Lake at 5.2 km and Ducharme Lake a touch under 6.1 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Flat Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -19°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. On average, late April opens the water and mid November closes it again. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. The season on Flat Lake follows the weather closely.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Russett Lake at 2.6 km is the nearest alternative. Rules at Flat Lake are worth checking on the day.
