Overcast skies today, with stillness over the whole water with the glass holding level. On Firth Lake, work the margins and the shelf beyond them first. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Firth Lake lies within the bounds of Timiskaming District, Ontario. The surface lies 344 metres up. The water covers around 4.63 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. With 21 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Timiskaming District list it sits near the top for size. Nearest town is Englehart, 76 km off. For a city, Greater Sudbury is 131 km off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Timiskaming District, recorded fish include brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Firth Lake a short move beats a long cast.
The seasonal spread runs -17°C to 17°C. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. The season on Firth Lake follows the weather closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Serpentine Lake, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Firth Lake are worth checking on the day.
