Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a working NW breeze and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Finlay Lake is reed fringes and open pockets. Numbers are low everywhere; the evening is the pick of them. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

The Timiskaming District entry here is Finlay Lake, in Ontario. This is rolling bush country. Roughly 39 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The outline measures near 5.3 km, so local knowledge counts. Capreol is the closest town at 80 km. Beyond it, Valley East at 87 km and Englehart at 89 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Fish documented in Timiskaming District include brook trout, northern pike and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. On Finlay Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The seasonal spread runs -16°C to 17°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Finlay Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Should this one be busy, Eleanor Lake is 0.7 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Finlay Lake for certain.
