Sun coming and going behind the cloud today, with dead-still conditions with the glass holding level. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Fern Lake. The forecast backs the stretch from the day. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Fern Lake falls in Algoma, part of Ontario. The surface lies 378 metres up. With some 96 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. There is roughly 7.9 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On our Algoma list it sits near the top for size. The nearest town is Sault Ste. Marie, 44 km away. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 221 km away. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Algoma, recorded fish include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. The shape of Fern Lake decides where the fish sit.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. That is the shape of the year on Fern Lake.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Red Rock Lake, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Fern Lake in what we hold.
