Clear overhead with good moonlight, with almost no wind to speak of and steady pressure. Most of the action on Day Lake should come off inflow corners and shaded margins. The day holds up well from afternoon into evening. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Day Lake lies in Rainy River District, in Ontario. The surface lies 428 metres up. Around 24 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Shoreline comes to about 2.0 km, small enough to learn in a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Rainy River District list. Some 15 km away sits Atikokan, the nearest settlement. Ignace follows at 72 km, then Ely at 104 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Rainy River District include northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Day Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -17°C. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. On Day Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Singleton Lake, 1.2 km out. Ask locally about Day Lake if anything is unclear.
